Let me ask you this: How many Patreon tiers should you actually have?

Too many… and people freeze.

Too few… and you leave money on the table.

But if you nail the sweet spot? That’s when things click.

So today, we’re breaking down how to craft compelling Patreon tiers your fans actually want to join. Let’s dive in.

Okay, first up — the Rule of Three… ish.

Here’s the deal: Most creators do best with three to five tiers.

Why? Because the human brain loves simple choices.

Think about it:

One tier? No comparison, feels flat.

Ten tiers? Overwhelm. People freeze.

Three to five? Just right. Enough to feel like choice, but not so much it creates stress.

So if you’re staring at your Patreon page with six, seven, eight tiers… trim it down. Your future self will thank you.

Next up: anchoring the middle.

Here’s a little psychology hack. People often pick the middle option, especially if the lowest feels “too basic” and the highest feels “too premium.”

So what do you do?

Make your middle tier the star of the show.

Example:

Tier 1: A small thank-you.

Tier 2 (the middle): Exclusive content + behind-the-scenes.

Tier 3: VIP extras that only a few will grab.

Notice how Tier 2 suddenly feels like the best value? That’s no accident. You’ve anchored it.

So, if you want the majority of your supporters in one tier, shine the spotlight right in the middle.

Now… let’s talk about avoiding tier fatigue.

This happens when every tier feels like a copy-paste.

Like… “Tier 1 gets a thank you, Tier 2 gets a thank you plus a sticker, Tier 3 gets a thank you plus a sticker plus… another sticker.”

Yawn.

Instead, each tier should feel distinct. Ask yourself:

👉 Why would someone upgrade instead of staying where they are?

Give each level its own flavor:

Entry tier: community + appreciation.

Middle tier: extra access, content, behind-the-scenes.

Top tier: personal connection, exclusivity, maybe even live chats.

That way, no one’s asking: “Wait, why would I pay more?” The value is obvious.

So to wrap it up:

Stick with 3–5 tiers.

Anchor your middle tier as the no-brainer choice.

And keep each tier distinct, so fans actually want to climb the ladder.
