Wondering how to use Descript for video editing? In this video editing review and Descript video editing tutorial, you'll learn how to use Descript for YouTube, Descript podcast editing and how to record an online course with the Descript video editor. So let's get right into this Descript.com tutorial so that you can generate auto subtitles for videos.

To use Descript for video editing, head over to descript.com, and then click on the 'get started for free' button. If you don't have a Descript account one, either sign up with Google or create one with your email address, and then click on the arrow at the bottom.

If you're new to Descript, you can start with three free transcription hours. When you click to sign up, the Descript installer will download to your computer, and then all you have to do is follow the steps to install it.

Once Descript has been installed, click on the 'sign in to Descript button', and then follow the steps to sign in to your Descript account. When asked 'who do you plan to use Descript with?', select either by myself or with my team. Don't worry since you can change this later. I'll select 'by myself', and then click on 'continue' at the bottom.

Descript will then ask you 'how do you plan to use Descript?'. You can either skip this question, or select all options that apply, including overdub voice synthesis, audiograms, video editing, podcasting, transcription and screen recording. I'll select Descript video editing, transcription and screen recording, and then click on 'continue' at the bottom.

If you plan on using Descript for screen recording, you can use this shortcut, shift command 2, to start and stop the recording. You can also check this box to launch the Descript screen recorder at login. I'll uncheck that box, and then click on 'continue' at the bottom.

Now that we have created our Descript account and set everything up, it's time to start using Descript for video editing. All projects that you have access to will show up in this home section. Here you can manage visibility and share projects with collaborators.

Let's click on the 'start a new project' button to start using Descript for video editing. Name your new project, such as to 'Descript Video Editing Project 1', select where you want to save this project from the drop down menu, I'll select 'My Workspace' 'Recordings', and then click on the 'create project' button at the bottom.

Since I'm on the Free Descript plan, I have access to 3 hours of transcription. If you want to keep using Descript for video editing, podcasting, screen recording and transcription, you may opt for one of its other plans. With Descript's free plan, you get 3 hours of transcription, full audio and video editing, unlimited screen recordings, overdub trial, and studio sound effect.

Descript also has 3 paid plans: Creator, Pro and Enterprise. Descript's Creator plan costs $12 per month on an annual plan or $15 per month on a monthly plan, though it's free for screen recording members. With Descript's Creator plan, you get everything in Free, plus 10 hours of transcription per month and watermark-free video export.

Descript's Pro plan costs $24 per month on an annual plan or $30 per month on a monthly plan, though it's free for screen recording members. With Descript's Pro plan, you get everything in Creator, plus 30 hours of transcription per month, unlimited overdub, filler words pro, audiograms pro, publish pro, batch file export, and custom drive and page branding.

Descript's Enterprise plan has custom pricing based on your needs and is ideal for 20+ person teams. With Descript's Enterprise plan, you get everything in Pro, plus a dedicated account representative, single sign on, overdub enterprise, Descript service agreement, security review, invoicing, and onboarding and training.

To start using Descript for video editing, either drag and drop audio and video files into the space provided, or click 'choose a file' to select audio and video files from your documents. I'll select the video files I recorded for my next video on the 'Wix admin dashboard', and then click on 'open'. Descript will add the files to your dashboard.

Descript will ask you to set the transcription language. I'll make sure that English is selected from the drop down menu. If you create videos in different languages, make sure to tick this 'always prompt for transcription language' box, and then click on 'transcribe'.

Your transcripts will be ready in a few minutes. If you wish, you can tick to 'combine 2 files into a multitrack sequence', and then click on 'done'.

If you're also using the Descript Free plan, you'll be able to see how much transcription time you have left up top. In my case, I have 2 hours and 37 minutes of Descript transcription remaining. To correct a transcription error, all you have to do is hold the E key and click to correct.

Descript video editing is a video word processor. What that means is that you edit video by editing text. From the panel up top, you can click on the plus icon to insert a voice file, audio recording, track, overdub, marker, inline note, comment, speaker label, text, fancy captions, rectangle, ellipse, waveform, progress bar, arrow and cue.

Under the tool icon, you can shorten word gaps, remove filler words, copy highlights, detect transcription errors and automatically assign multicam. You can also highlight a piece of text to ignore it, make it bold, make it italic, highlight it, clip it to composition, resize the word gap, add a comment, correct it or overdub.

So let's go ahead and use Descript for video editing. The first thing I'll do is click on the tool icon, and then on 'shorten word gaps'. A 'shorten word gaps' panel will appear on the left. From here, you can click on these two drop down menus up top to select what you want to shorten (text, word gaps or filler words - I'll select word gaps) and the length of that word gap (I'll leave mine as longer than 3 seconds).

You can then view all the results that match those criteria that you set. At the bottom, you can then select what you want to shorten that word gap to. In my case, I'll select 1 second. You can either select each individual instance you want to apply that shorten word gap edit, and then click on 'apply', or click on 'apply to all' at the bottom, which is what I'll do.

To delete a mistake you made when recording using Descript video editing, such as I made in this section over here, all you have to do is select the portion you want to remove, and then click on 'ignore' from the panel up top. Now if we play this section again, you'll notice that Descript jumps over the mistake, so that just the correct part remains.

What I want to do now is move my YouTube video's intro, which is at the end of this Descript transcription, to the very start. To do that, all you have to do is select the text where you're doing the intro, right click, and then click on 'cut'. Now place your cursor where you want that intro to go, which in my case is at the very start, right click, and then click on 'paste'. Now if we click on play, you'll see the YouTube intro at the very start.

Another thing we can do when using Descript for video editing is remove filler words. To do that, click on the tool icon, and then on 'remove filler words'. A 'remove filler words' panel will appear on the left.

From here, you'll be able to see all instances where you used filler words, and then delete or ignore that part, and replace with a gap clip if you wish. I'll make sure that 'delete' is selected, and then click on 'apply to all'.

Make sure that you go through the entire Descript transcript to remove any mistakes you made, to reorder any parts and to add any bells and whistles by clicking on the plus icon up top. Once you're done using Descript for video editing, click on 'publish' up top.

Enter the page name, I'll leave mine as Descript Video Editing Project 1, select the page access from the drop down menu (public - indexed by search engines, unlisted - anyone with the link can access or restricted - project access is required to view, I'll select restricted), and select the page settings, including allow comments where anyone with a Descript account can leave comments (I'll leave that turned off) and show transcript (I'll leave that turned on). Once you're done setting your export setting, click on 'publish' at the bottom.

When your page has been published, you can find your page in the drive view. Anyone visiting your page will be able to view it. You can then copy your Descript video editing link, open it in a browser or copy the embed code.

If you want to use Descript video editing to edit YouTube videos, or wish to save the file to your computer, click on 'publish' up top and rather than exporting it as a project, click on 'export' again. From here, you can do a cloud export to a page, to an audiogram, to YouTube, or to a number of other places, do a file export as text, subtitles, audio, video or GIF, or even do a timeline export to Samplitude / Reaper, Final Cut Pro, Pro Tools / Logic, Adobe Audition or Adobe Premiere.
