Here are the 5 top ways to get more views on YouTube by cracking the YouTube algorithm:
1. Increase your watch time.
YouTube wants viewers to stay on their platform for as long as possible, because the more YouTube videos you watch, the more ads you see, and the more money YouTube makes. In order to increase your watch time on YouTube, you should focus on creating videos that are similar in topic to each other.
For instance, all the videos I published and will publish this month are related to how to start and grow a YouTube channel, and that was totally done on purpose. By creating videos on the same general topic, I can refer to a previous video or allude to a topic that will be discussed in more detail in a later video. Also, if you take a look at the description box below, I have a 'related videos' section, that includes similar videos to this one, so that my content becomes more binge-worthy.
As such, if you go watch the video I mention in the current video, or subscribe to be notified of a future video, I end up increasing my watch time. As time goes by, YouTube will see that my viewers are spending more and more time on my channel watching my video, and thus start recommending my videos on people's homepages and in the suggested videos section.
2. Increase your video engagement.
The more time your viewers spend watching a specific video, the more likes that video gets, and the more comments that video has, especially in the first 24 hours after the video is published, the more prone YouTube will be to suggest that video. This happens because YouTube wants to recommend content that their viewers are already enjoying and interacting with. So make sure that whenever someone comments on your YouTube video, you write back, which will create a new comment, and thus increase your video engagement.
Also, don't be afraid to watch and like your own videos, as well as ask your viewers to like, comment and subscribe to your YouTube channel, both at the start and end of the video. If you give them a pointer of what they should comment, even better. You'll notice that at the end of this video I'll say 'so which one of the top ways of how to get more views on YouTube by cracking the YouTube algorithm as a new YouTuber will you try out first?'. This makes it easy for you to comment 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 which is fast and doesn't take much brain power.
3. Use long tail keywords.
After Google, YouTube is the world's largest search engine, so it uses the keywords you add to your videos to figure out what you're talking about. Just as you probably do when writing a blog post, you need to figure out what people are searching for, and which keywords they're using, to land on a particular topic.
One of the easiest ways to find keywords is to use the YouTube search bar. Start typing in the topic you want to create your YouTube video on, such as 'how to get more views on YouTube', and see what pops up. As you can see, the channels that are ranking for this keyword have thousands if not millions of subscribers, and already have a large number of views.
In order to rank for this same general keyword, which has a lot of competition from big players, you should target a long tail keyword, such as 'how to get more views on youtube as a small YouTuber'. When you're starting out, the more niche your topic is, the better.
Once you've figured out which long tail keyword you want to target, make sure you add it to your YouTube video's title, description, tags and even in what you say. YouTube automatically captions your videos, or you can add captions to the videos yourself, so make sure that you use that keyword in your video.
If you pay attention to this video's introduction, you'll notice that I say 'YouTube algorithm', 'how to get more views on YouTube' and 'how to grow a YouTube channel even as a small YouTuber', which are all keywords that I want to rank for. 4. Increase your click-through rate.
YouTube calculates the number of views your video gets per impressions show. This is a measure of how often your viewers clicked and watched a video after seeing it in search results, in their home feed or even as a suggested video.
There are two things you can do to increase your video's click-through rate: create an eye-catching thumbnail and write a clickable title. When searching for the long tail keyword that you want to rank for, take a look at the thumbnails of the first few results that pop up. These videos are ranking for a reason, so take note of what kinds of images and words they add to their thumbnails that may be working in their favor.

With regard to your YouTube video's title, you want to obviously include your keyword to it, but also trigger some kind of emotion. Having a click-bait title is okay, as long as you deliver on what you promise. For example, when I searched for 'how to get more views on YouTube', all of the first few videos included words that trigger clicks, such as 'new strategy', 'easy and free', 'in 3 minutes', and 'how to grow with 0 views and 0 subscribers'.
5. Create longer videos.
One of the best ways to get more views on YouTube, increase your watch time and rank higher in search even as a new YouTuber that combines the other points that we discussed in this video is to create videos that are longer in length compared to other videos that are ranking for the same keyword.
Just think about it. If the video that's ranking #1 for 'how to get more views on YouTube' is 5 minutes long, and your video is 10 minutes long, chances are that, if your content is good, viewers will spend more time watching your video. If your video's viewers are engaged, meaning that their liking, commenting and subscribing, and if you've created a title and thumbnail that entice new viewers to click on your video, YouTube will favor your video over the one that's already ranking #1. So whenever you find a long tail keyword to target, take a look at the length of the videos that are already ranking for that keyword, and make your video longer than that.
