Wondering which website builder you should choose: Wix or Wordpress? In my last video, we did a Wix vs Squarespace comparison, if you haven't watched that yet, I'll leave the link to it in the description box below, and in this video, I'll be sharing the similarities and differences between Wix and Wordpress so that you can decide which website builder is best.
By the end of this video, you'll know exactly what are the pros and cons of using Wix vs WordPress for SEO and for blogging, the cost differences between both website platforms, and other factors that may influence your decision when choosing WordPress vs Wix, so that you can choose the best website builder for you. If you're excited about this video, make sure you like this video, hit the subscribe button and the bell to be notified every time I post a new video, and with that said let's jump right in.
1. Price
Wix has two types of plans: website plans that are great for showcasing a professional site, and business and ecommerce plans which are essential for accepting online payments, and you can choose between four options within each one. The website plans range from $13 per month for the Combo plan up to $39 per month for the VIP plan, and the business and ecommerce plans range from $23 per month for the Business Basic plan up to custom pricing for the Enterprise plan. Hosting is included in all of Wix's plans.
With Wix, you can create a website for free, and get hundreds of templates, unlimited pages and top grade hosting free of charge. If you decide to upgrade to a premium plan, you can connect your own domain, remove Wix ads from your site, and more. You can try a Wix premium plan for free as well, and if you decide it's not for you, you can cancel within 14 days and receive a full refund.
Wordpress.org is free independent of the time that you use the platform, but hosting is up to you. That means that you'll have to use a platform like Hostinger to set up your WordPress account.
Hostinger offers three WordPress hosting plans that range from $11.95 per month for the WordPress Starter plan up to $58 per month for the WordPress Enterprise plan. One advantage of Hostinger is that it frequently runs sales, so in effect you're paying way less than that per month, and if you use the coupon code that I added to the description box below, you get an additional 10% off.
2. Features
Wix is a website builder whereas WordPress is a content management system. Both website builders offer core features every website needs, such as photo galleries, maps, contact forms, videos and buttons, but WordPress offers a number of unconventional features as well, largely due to its huge database of plugins.
3. Editor
Wix offers a visual, drag-and-drop editor that allows you to have total design freedom since you can move any element anywhere on your page in a way that's completely unrestricted. WordPress is more similar to Squarespace in the sense that it's a block-based editor.
However, unlike both Wix and Squarespace, WordPress doesn't show what your entire website will look like within its editor. You'll have to keep switching between the WordPress editor and the published website to see what your website will actually look like.
4. Templates
Wix offers a number of templates that you can choose from, that are organized into different categories, such as blogs and online stores, to make it easier for you to select a website template that fits your needs. There are both modern and classic templates that you can choose from, and all templates are mobile responsive.
Once you select a template in Wix, and start editing your website with it, you can't go back and change it to another template without losing all of the work you've done due to Wix's unrestricted drag-and-drop editor.
Since anyone can contribute to WordPress, there is a way larger number of templates that you can choose from, both directly within WordPress and by accessing third party websites, such as Theme Forest. You can also tweak the code of these themes yourself to make them completely unique to you. Since WordPress's editor is structured, you can change your template freely even after you've started creating your website without having to redo all of the work.
5. Ecommerce
Wix comes with ecommerce functionalities, though you will have to opt for a more advanced premium plan in order to sell your products and services. Its online store includes features such as digital products, custom email receipts, connect to print on demand services, point of sale system, Instagram shop tagging, automated cart recovery, and recurring payment products.
Setting up an online store with WordPress is easy due to its integration with WooCommerce, and another number of plugins that are designed to sell both physical and digital products and services, events and subscriptions. Having plugins that you can customize to suit your needs makes WordPress more flexible in terms of when compared to Wix.
6. Blogging
You can create a blog in both WordPress and Wix, though while the Wix blog is easier to use, the WordPress blog editor is more advanced. On the whole, both website builders include all of the functions a blog needs, such as creating and scheduling blog posts, saving blog posts as drafts, adding tags and categories to blog posts, and editing the blog post's description and URL.
One of the main advantages of the WordPress blog over the Wix blog is that it has a native commenting system, unlike Wix's commenting system that's powered by Facebook. You can also customize WordPress' blog further due to the ability to add plugins and edit its code.
7. Support
Every Wix premium plan comes with 24/7 priority support, and you can contact them both by email and phone. When you upgrade to an even higher premium plan, you can also get VIP phone support and skip the line. Wix also has a help center, with forums, articles and tutorials, that help you when creating your website with step-by-step instructions and videos.
WordPress does not offer customer support as a whole, but you can oftentimes contact the developers of a particular theme or plugin, especially if it's paid, if you need additional assistance. WordPress does offer a community forum, but the answers to your questions may be hit and miss.
8. Apps & Widgets
Wix has an app market that allows you to add-on a number of extra features to your site in a number of different categories. There are both free and paid add-ons, as well as ones that are created by Wix and others that are created by third party developers. You can also use Corvid by Wix to create databases and customize your site's user experience even further.
WordPress has a huge database of plugins that you can add to your site, that is way larger than the one that Wix offers. There most likely is a WordPress plugin for any feature that you may think of or want. Some of WordPress' plugins are free and others are paid.
9. SEO
Wix includes a number of features that make it easy to optimize your site for search. These SEO features include page title, meta description, custom URLs, headings, image alt attributes, 301 redirects, SSL encryption, search engine instructions, and the options to add both Google Analytics and Google Search Console.
WordPress has plugins, such as Yoast SEO, which give it full SEO capabilities, that are more advanced than the ones offered by Wix. For instance, you can completely edit the URL of your blog posts to fit the structure that you prefer. WordPress' load time is also faster, which is another plus.
