Wondering how to make graphics for your YouTube videos with Canva? In this Canva video tutorial, you'll learn all about designing video graphics in Canva so that you can start creating beautiful graphics for YouTube, be it a Canva YouTube thumbnail, Canva YouTube banner or something else. So let's get right into this Canva tutorial for beginners on how to use Canva for visual marketing.
First off, if you don't have a Canva account yet, just click on the link in the description box below to sign up for free. To make graphics for your YouTube videos with Canva, log in to your Canva account, click on ‘your projects’ from the left-hand side panel, and then on ‘designs’ up top.
To create video graphics in Canva with ease, I actually created a number of Canva templates that I can use and customize. These include video graphics in Canva for Pinterest pins, YouTube thumbnails, Instagram posts, Instagram stories, Instagram Reels, email marketing and promotional graphics. If you want to save time as well, and get a number of these templates for yourself, make sure to check out my Online Business Templates Vault which comes with 50 done-for-you Canva templates which will help you save 90% of the time you're currently spending on designing new graphics and create all the graphics you need for your online business in just a few clicks. I'll leave the link to it in the description box below.
To use these templates for video graphics in Canva, hover your mouse over the template you wish to use, such as this first Pinterest pin one, click on the three little dots on the top, right-hand side, and then click on ‘make a copy'. For the second Pinterest pin, I'll check out which was the last Pinterest pin template I used, click on the ‘Pinterest templates’ folder on the left-hand side panel, click on the following Pinterest pin template, and then on ‘use this template'.
Now I'll x out of this design, click on ‘your projects’ from the left-hand side panel, and then on ‘designs’ up top. Locate the YouTube video thumbnail graphic, hover your mouse over it, click on the three little dots on the top, right-hand side, and then click on ‘make a copy'. Follow this process again to make a second copy of this YouTube video thumbnail graphic.
Since I don't want to duplicate the designs for my email marketing, promotional, Instagram post, Instagram story and Instagram Reels video graphics in Canva, I'll just click on them to open them up. Now let's start the editing process of these graphics for your YouTube videos with Canva.
The first thing I'll do is copy the YouTube video's title I'll be creating video graphics in Canva for from my script document, and rename some of these designs. To edit this first Pinterest pin video graphic in Canva, all I'll do is change the text, click on the downward pointing arrow up top, change the file type to JPG, and then click on download.
To edit this second Pinterest pin video graphic in Canva, I'll change the text, click on ‘photos’ from the left-hand side panel, and locate a photo that relates to the topic of the video I'm creating.
Since I'm a Canva Pro user, which you can try out for free by clicking on the link in the description box below, I have access to over 100 million premium stock photos, videos, audio and graphics.
Once I've located a photo that relates to the topic of my video, I'll drag-and-drop it where this current photo is to replace it. Then all that's left to do is click on the downward pointing arrow up top, change the file type to JPG, and then click on download.
To edit this first YouTube thumbnail, I'll replace the text and image, make a copy of this first page by clicking on ‘duplicate this page’ on the top, right-hand side, and then drag-and-drop the YouTube play icon from the previous design into this second page. Then I'll go ahead and click on ‘delete page’ on the top, right-hand side of the previous design.
I like saving each of these pages individually rather than at the same time, so to do that I'll click on ‘download’ up top, change the file type to JPG, select page one, and then click on ‘download’. Once that first page has been saved, I'll repeat this same process again, but this time select page two, and then click on ‘download’.
As I mentioned in my previous video on ‘how to write a script for a YouTube video’, if you haven't watched that yet, I'll leave the link to it in the description box below, since I plan my YouTube videos in advance, I like adding a teaser for my following YouTube video at the end of this current one. That's why I created two YouTube thumbnail video graphics in Canva: one YouTube thumbnail video graphic is for the current video we're currently working on and the other is for the following YouTube video which we'll be teasing.
To edit this second YouTube thumbnail, I'll first rename it as my subsequent YouTube video, replace the text and image, make a copy of this first page by clicking on ‘duplicate this page’ on the top, right-hand side, and then drag-and-drop the YouTube play icon from the previous design into this second page. Then I'll go ahead and click on ‘delete page’ on the top, right-hand side of the previous design.
Just as before, I like saving each of these pages individually rather than at the same time, so to do that I'll click on ‘download’ up top, change the file type to JPG, select page one, and then click on ‘download’. Once that first page has been saved, I'll repeat this same process again, but this time select page two, and then click on ‘download’.
Once the YouTube thumbnail video graphic with the YouTube play icon for this current video and the subsequent video have downloaded, I'll drag-and-drop them into Canva to add them to my uploads folder. I use these video graphics in Canva for my email marketing, promotional, Instagram post, and Instagram story designs.
To edit this email marketing design, I'll drag-and-drop the YouTube thumbnail video graphic with the YouTube play icon into the space provided, change the text, and then click on the ‘download’ button up top. I'll make sure that the file type is set to GIF, select the appropriate page, and then click on ‘download’.
To edit this promotional graphic design, I'll drag-and-drop the YouTube thumbnail video graphic with the YouTube play icon into the space provided, and then click on the downward pointing arrow up top. I'll make sure that the file type is set to MP4 video, and then click on ‘download’.
To edit this first Instagram post design, I'll add the image we've been using to promote this YouTube video as the background image, and change the text. To edit this second Instagram post design, which is a carousel post, I'll drag-and-drop the YouTube thumbnail video graphic with the YouTube play icon into the space provided, and change the text. I'll also add the video title and main points of the script to the subsequent pages of the Instagram carousel post.
I like saving each of these pages individually rather than at the same time, so to do that I'll click on ‘download’ up top, change the file type to JPG, select page one, and then click on ‘download’. Once that first page has been saved, I'll repeat this same process again, to save all of the Instagram post design video graphics in Canva.
To edit this Instagram story, I'll drag-and-drop the YouTube thumbnail video graphic with the YouTube play icon into the space provided, and then click on the ‘download’ button up top. I'll make sure that the file type is set to JPG, select the appropriate page, and then click on ‘download’.
Lastly, we'll be adding the video in this Instagram Reel in a later video, since I can only add it once I have recorded, edited and uploaded it with captions, so stay tuned for that. At this moment in time, all I'll be doing is editing the text.
