How To Schedule Instagram Posts: How To Schedule Instagram Posts For Free, With Canva + With Later

How To Schedule Instagram Posts For Free

Open your Instagram app and go to your profile page. Then, tap on the three lines in the top right-hand corner and select "Settings and Privacy". From there, scroll down and tap on "Archiving and downloading". You'll then see a section that says "Original Posts". Turn on the toggle for "Save Original Posts" so that Instagram saves the photos you upload to your camera roll.

Now that we've got that sorted, let's move on to scheduling a post. Go to your profile page and select the "+" button to create a new post. Choose the photo you want to upload and then edit it as you normally would. Once you're happy with your post, tap on the "Next" button.

Here's where the magic happens. Normally, you would select the "Share" button and post your content immediately. But we want to schedule this post, so instead, we're going to tap on the "Schedule" button.

To do so, click on 'advanced settings' at the bottom, and then turn on the toggle next to where it says 'schedule this post'. If you don't see the option to schedule, don't worry. Instagram is still rolling out this feature to all accounts, so you may have to wait a bit longer.

Once you tap on the "Schedule" button, select the date and time you want your post to go live. You can schedule your post up to six months in advance! Once you're happy with your scheduling, tap on the "set time" button again to confirm.

Click on the backwards pointing arrow, and then on 'schedule' on the top right. And that's it! You've successfully scheduled an Instagram post for free using the Instagram app.

Now, let's say you want to make some changes to your scheduled post. No problem! Go to your profile page and tap on the three lines in the top right-hand corner. Select "Scheduled content". You'll see a list of all your scheduled posts. Tap on the post you want to edit, click on the three little dots on the top, right, and then on 'delete', 'edit post', 'reschedule' or 'share now'. Make your changes, and tap on the "Done" button.

How To Schedule Instagram Posts With Canva

First off, if you don't have a Canva account yet, just click on the link in the description box below to sign up for free. The Canva social media scheduler, called the Canva content planner, is a Canva Pro feature, which allows you to both edit and schedule social media posts directly from Canva. You can schedule posts to the following social media platforms: Facebook (group and page), Instagram (though you must have a business account), Twitter, LinkedIn, Slack and Tumblr.

There are two ways that you can schedule social media posts from Canva: you can schedule a post from the content planner, and you can schedule a post from the Canva editor. Let me show you how to schedule Instagram posts with Canva using both methods.

The first thing you'll need to do is either open up an existing Instagram post you created with Canva, or create a new one. To open up an existing Instagram post, click on 'all of your designs' from Canva's left-hand side panel, and then click on your Instagram post. To create a new Instagram post in Canva, click on 'recommended for you' from Canva's left-hand side panel, and then select 'Instagram post'.

You can either click on 'templates' from the left-hand side panel to have a starting point when creating your Instagram post, and then customize the existing elements, or design this Instagram post from scratch, and click on any of the icons on the left-hand side panel to add additional elements to edit this Canva design further so that it looks the way you wish.

Now that we have a complete Instagram post that we can schedule, let me show you how to schedule this Instagram post from the Canva editor. All you have to do is click on the three little dots on the top, right-hand side, and then on 'schedule'. As you can see, there's a little crown next to this schedule icon, meaning that it's a Canva Pro feature, but you can try it out for free by clicking on the link in the description box below.

If the 'schedule' option isn't apparent for you under this 'recommended' section, it'll be under this 'share' section instead. You may have to click on the three little dots under that section to see all and locate it.

So let's go ahead and click on 'schedule'. All you have to do is select a date and time for when you want to schedule this Instagram post (the Canva social media scheduler will be set to your local timezone), and then click on 'next'.

Select a channel, which is the social media platform you want to link to, in our case, Instagram Business. If you're not connected to it yet, just follow the steps that appear on your screen to connect to your Instagram Business account via Facebook.

If your design has multiple pages, select the pages that you want to publish, which may be limited depending on your selected platform, write a caption, and then either click to schedule the Instagram post, or to save it as a draft.

I won't complete this process now so that I can show you how to schedule this Instagram post from the Canva content planner. So let's click on 'home' on the top, left-hand side to head back to Canva's homepage. From Canva's homepage, click on 'content planner' from the left-hand side panel.

Place your cursor over the date in which you wish to schedule an Instagram post, and then click on the plus sign that appears on the top, right-hand side. Canva will show you your recent designs, as well as suggested templates to create a new post. You can also click on 'your library' on the right to see all of your designs, or on 'create a design' to create a new design from scratch.

Let's go ahead and click on the Instagram post we just created. Just as before, click on the three little dots, and then on 'change date and time' to select the date and time in which you wish to schedule this Instagram post with Canva. The Canva content planner will be set to your local timezone.

Select a channel, which is the social media platform you want to link to, in our case, Instagram Business. If your design has multiple pages, select the pages that you want to publish, which may be limited depending on your selected platform, write a caption, and then either click to schedule the Instagram post, or to save it as a draft.

I'll go ahead and click on 'schedule post' to schedule this Instagram post with Canva. If you wish to reschedule or delete this Instagram post you scheduled, select the post in the Canva content planner, and then click on the three little dots. To reschedule or edit this Instagram post, select a new date or time, or edit its caption. To delete this Instagram post, just click on 'delete post' at the bottom.

How To Schedule Instagram Posts With Later

We'll be using an app and website called Later to schedule Instagram posts both from our phone and desktop. If you don't have a Later account yet, click on the link in the description box below to sign up for free, as well as get 10 more posts per month for free.

With Later's free plan, you can upload up to 30 posts per month and all of these posts need to be photos. Since I upload a mixture of photos and videos each week, I use Later's Starter plan, which allows you to post up to 60 photos and videos per month.

To schedule Instagram posts from your phone, open the Later app, click on 'media' from the bottom, left-hand side, and then click on the plus sign to upload media to your Later account either from your photo library or to take a new photo or video. Select the Instagram post you wish to schedule, and then click on 'done' up top.

Once the Instagram post you wish to schedule has been uploaded to your media library, click on it, and then on 'create post'. Click on your Instagram profile, and then complete the option that appears on the following page. You can edit your Instagram post, type in a caption, add a first comment and link.in bio link, tag the location as well as tag users.

Up top you can select whether you want Later to auto publish your Instagram post at the scheduled time, which supports single image and video posts, or have Later send you a push notification to publish your post, which does not support location and user tagging. Since we want to schedule our Instagram post, and have this posting be automated, select 'auto publish', and then click on 'save' up top, and then on 'next'.

You can either have the Instagram post be published right now, or pick a time so that the Instagram post is scheduled for later. Let's click on this second option, select a date and time, and then click on 'set time' to schedule the Instagram post from your phone.

You can also use the Later website to schedule Instagram posts from your desktop. To do so, on the Later website, click on 'calendar' from the left-hand side panel. You can either select a post to schedule to Instagram from your computer using Dropbox or Google Drive, or you can click on 'upload media' to select a post from your documents. Once you've located the Instagram post you wish to schedule from your desktop, click on 'open'.

The post you just uploaded will now appear in this section. You can upload more than one Instagram post at a time, and then use the filters to sort by media usage and media type. The Instagram posts you add to Later to then schedule to Instagram will also appear in the 'media library' section on the left-hand side panel.

To schedule one of these Instagram posts on Instagram from your computer, you can either drag the media onto the calendar to schedule it, or click on it directly to open it up. Once the Instagram post has been opened, click on 'create post’ to create a post to be scheduled to Instagram.

From here, you can add an Instagram post caption with emojis, add the first comment, so if you don't want your Instagram hashtags to be in the caption, you can add them here, add a link to any web page in this linkin.bio section, so that when someone clicks on your profile link, and then on this Instagram post, they can be redirected to said website, add a location, and, if your Instagram post is a video instead of a picture, you can change the thumbnail cover as well.

At the bottom, you can select an exact date and time for this Instagram post to be scheduled on Instagram, and then choose whether you want Later to automatically upload this post to Instagram on your behalf on this date and time, or have it send you a notification on your mobile device on this date and time for you to manually post this Instagram post. Once you're done scheduling the Instagram post, click on 'save'.
