Facebook Page Ownership Vs Access: What Is The Difference And How To Transfer Both

Are you an agency owner or business owner trying to hire a social media manager — but suddenly Facebook changed everything on you?

You log in expecting Page Roles, and instead you get Access… Ownership… and a completely different back-end.

Most people assume Access = Ownership.

But that single misunderstanding is the reason people get locked out of their own Facebook Page.

By the end of this video, you'll know exactly what each one means, how to use them correctly, and the one mistake you must avoid if you don’t want to lose control of your business.

And trust me — the thing I reveal later in this video could save you thousands of dollars and weeks of headaches.

When Facebook switched to “New Pages Experience,” even I had a moment of,

“Wait… where did everything go?”

So if you're confused, I get it — I was right there with you.

Access vs. Ownership — The Truth Behind the New Facebook System

Let’s start with the biggest shift:

Ownership and Access are NOT the same thing.

Ownership = The Boss.

This belongs to the Business Manager or account that created the Page.

It’s like the house deed — the ultimate authority.

Owners control financial settings, ad accounts, permissions… everything.

Access = The Employee.

This is what you give to a social media manager or agency.

It’s more like handing someone a key to the house. They can go inside, do the work, publish posts, run ads…

…but it’s NOT their house.

Here’s where most beginners mess up:

They think giving someone Full Control Access is the same as transferring ownership.

It isn’t.

Ownership is the top layer. Access is the permission layer.

And Facebook now separates them because too many people were accidentally handing over the deed when all they meant to give was the key.

Why Facebook Page Ownership Matters

Let's talk about why this difference actually matters.

Scenario 1 — The Safe Case:

Your client gives your agency access to manage their Page.

You can publish, schedule, and run ads.

But the client still owns everything.

If they end the contract, they can remove your access instantly.

No drama. No risk.

Scenario 2 — The Dangerous Case:

A freelancer gets added as the owner by mistake.

Now the freelancer — not the business owner — controls the entire Page.

They can remove the business from their own Page.

They can lock the client out.

They can even disconnect the original ad account.

This happens more often than you think.

And here’s the part nobody tells you:

Facebook will NOT get involved.

If the wrong person becomes the owner, fixing it can be almost impossible without legal documentation.

If you learned Facebook Pages 3+ years ago, forget everything you know.

Page Roles are gone.

The new structure uses Access and Ownership, and the rules are much stricter — especially around who controls assets.

How to Grant Facebook Page Access

Let’s walk through how to do this the right way.

Step 1: Open Facebook, click on your profile picture on the top, right-hand side, and then switch into your Facebook Page.

Click on Professional Dashboard from the left-hand side panel, and then on Page Access from the right.

Step 2: Choose the level of access you want to grant to the person:

- People with Facebook access: These people can switch into the Page and manage it directly on Facebook, or by using other tools like Meta Business Suite or Creator Studio.

- People with task access: These people can't switch into the Page on Facebook, but they can manage specific tasks using other tools like Meta Business Suite or Creator Studio.

- Community managers: Community managers can moderate chat comments, suspend or remove people who violate community standards and see all admins of this Page.

I’m going to choose People with task access, and then click on Add new on the right.

Step 3: On the Add New popup that appears, click on Next at the bottom.

Step 4: Use the search bar to find who should have Facebook access of this Page. You can search the person by name or email.

Step 5: Choose what this person can manage:

- Content: Create, manage or delete posts, stories and more as the Page.

- Messages and calls: Respond to direct messages and make calls as the Page.

- Community Activity: Review and respond to comments, remove unwanted comments and report activity.

- Ads: Create, manage and delete ads for the Page.

- Insights: See how the Page, content and ads perform.

I’ll select Content and Community activity for instance, and then click on Give Access at the bottom.

Facebook Page access is perfect for:

- Agencies

- Social media managers

- Freelancers

- Virtual assistants

You’re giving them the key — not the deed.

How to Transfer Facebook Page Ownership

Now let’s go into the part most people never learn correctly.

The first steps are very similar to how to grant Facebook page access.

Step 1: Open Facebook, click on your profile picture on the top, right-hand side, and then switch into your Facebook Page.

Click on Professional Dashboard from the left-hand side panel, and then on Page Access from the right.

Step 2: Locate where it says People with Facebook access, and then click on Add New on the right.

Step 3: On the Add New popup that appears, click on Next at the bottom.

Step 4: Use the search bar to find who should have Facebook access of this Page. You can search the person by name or email.

Step 5: Make sure that you turn this Allow this person to have full control toggle to on, and then click on Give Access at the bottom.

The new Business Manager MUST accept the Page. Ownership doesn’t transfer until they confirm.

Step 6: Remove the old owner ONLY after everything is confirmed and stable by locating them in this people with Facebook access section, clicking on the three little dots on the right, and then clicking on Remove access.

Here’s why this matters:

If you remove yourself too early, the Page could get stuck with no valid owner — and Facebook may not help you restore it.

Ownership transfers are serious.

Only do this if you’re:

- Selling your business

- Migrating a company asset

- Moving all digital properties under a single Business Manager

Everyone else?

Use Access, not Ownership.

The Advanced Facebook Page Tip Most People Don’t Know

Here’s the insider secret:

When you connect a Page to a Business Manager, YOU DON’T automatically become the owner.

The original creator still holds the deed unless the transfer is completed.

This is why so many people think they “own” a client’s Page —
when in reality, they only have Full Control Access.

And if the client removes them?

Everything disappears instantly.

Knowing this protects your business and keeps clients safe.

Most freelancers don’t figure this out until they’re locked out of a project.

So here’s the golden rule:

Never transfer Facebook Page ownership unless you're selling the business.

For everything else — onboarding social media managers, agencies, VAs —
use Access, not Ownership.

If this helped you finally understand Facebook Page Access vs. Ownership, hit like so more business owners can find this and avoid mistakes.
