How To Skyrocket Your Website's Traffic For Free From Pinterest

Discover how to master Pinterest to get more website traffic from your ideal customers who can’t wait to join your email list and learn more from you

The main advantage of using Pinterest to promote your website and blog posts is that, unlike Facebook, it is a search engine. This means that your pins can be found and drive traffic to your site for a long time after they are added to the platform.

Right now, over 30% of my site’s traffic comes from Pinterest, and I don’t even pin that many times per day, just around 3 times to be exact. The best part is that you don’t just get any type of traffic from Pinterest, but instead you get targeted and engaged traffic from your ideal customers who can’t wait to join your e-mail list and learn more about what you have to offer.

So let’s get into Pinterest strategy. Before you even start adding content and pinning, you should create an eye-catching profile. Your profile picture should be both professional and infuse your personality, you should add keywords to your name and bio, such as blogger, entrepreneur, web design, productivity, or coach, customize your board covers, and drag-and-drop them so that the most important boards appear first.

One great tip is to opt for a business profile so you have access to analytics and rich pins. Rich pins have their titles in bold, so they stand out from the rest. Just remember to verify your website URL in your settings

There are certain things that both Pinterest and Pinterest users prefer, and that lead to more saves and clicks. Vertical images do better than horizontal ones, and here’s a trick, they do even better if they are longer than the predefined size since they occupy more space on the screen.

Images that have big text overlay that is easy to read do better, especially if the background is pink or blue. A great thing to pin is infographics, or sample content, since those are deemed as more value-adding than just a blog post title.

As I previously mentioned, Pinterest is great, especially over Facebook, because not only is it a social media and visual platform, but also a search engine. So treat it accordingly. Make sure that your board titles and descriptions, as well as post captions, include keywords, and add power words and calls to action that entice the pinner to click through to your website.

To create stunning Pinterest images with ease, you can use a free and wonderful online tool called Canva. The usual size of a Pinterest image is 735px by 1102px, and Canva already has a pre-set template that you can customize that is this exact size.

So how do you get results on Pinterest by pinning only 2-3 times per day, and without using a paid tool such as Tailwind or Board Booster? Just a disclaimer here before we go on: I have nothing against paid tools, but if you can get results for free, especially when you are just starting out, it’s worth it. There are two things you should do:

  1. Create multiple Pinterest images for each blog post you create, 3-5 is a good number to start. You don’t need to add them all to your blog. I usually have only one pinnable image per blog post on the page itself, but create multiple images and save them to my computer so I have them on file. Play around with different colors, titles, or even create an infographic or list version of your post that you can pin.

  2. Now get out a calendar and map out when you are going to pin each one, so that you are pinning 2-3 times per day. Pin that same image to all Pinterest group boards you are a part of and that are applicable to the subject of whatever it is you are pinning. Remember to add them to a few of your own boards as well.

The key here is consistency, and not quantity. Oftentimes, I do pin the content of others, but I pin things that I find interesting and would enjoy reading myself, rather than just pin their content so that I pin something.

Stay tuned for next week’s blog post, where we’ll talk about a place where I find great content to pin: Facebook groups. We’ll cover in detail how to master them to skyrocket your website's traffic and ignite your e-mail list.
