iMovie Animation: How To Animate Graphics In iMovie | Animation In iMovie Tutorial

Today we’re going to talk about how to animate graphics in iMovie. Last week, we covered how to add text to iMovie, if you haven't watched that video yet, you can find the link to it in the description box below, and today you'll learn how to animate that piece of text, or other kinds of graphics such as your logo and icons, so that they pop, move or drop in your video. The cool thing is that you can do this with Keynote and iMovie, which are both free applications for Mac and are super user friendly.

Stay tuned until the end of this video to learn how to animate graphics in iMovie using Keynote, and to get a FREE cheat sheet with 9 other brilliant tools that you can use in your online business to save time and boost your productivity. Also, make sure to subscribe and hit the bell to be notified every Tuesday when I post a new video.

Alright, so let’s get right into how to animate graphics in iMovie.

If you don't have graphics or icons yet, you can use a free graphic design tool called Canva to create them. Once you've logged in to your Canva account, which you can get started with today for free by clicking on the link in the description box below, click on the blue 'create a design' button on the top left, and then on 'Instagram post'. We're selecting this design since it has a square shape.

Now click on 'elements' from the menu on the left, and then in the search bar, search for the type of icon you wish. For instance, let's say I want to create icons so that when I say 'make sure to subscribe and hit the bell', YouTube and bell icons appear. So let's search for YouTube, and choose this first icons that appears, and on our second page, let's search for bell, and choose this one that shows an alarm bell sound. If you wish, you can change the color of these icons from the color picker up top to match with your branding, or you can leave them as is.

After you've edited your graphics to look the way you want, and wish to save them to your computer, click on the downward pointing arrow on the top right, and make sure that the file type is PNG. If you don't mind that this white background or whatever colored background you're using appears on your video, just go ahead and click on 'download'.

But, if you want this white background to actually be transparent, so that the graphics overlay whatever it is that you're showing in the video, you need to click on this 'transparent background' checkbox before downloading. Transparent backgrounds in Canva are a Canva Pro feature, which you can try out for free for 30 days by clicking on the link in the description box below. So as you can see, what we have here are the two icons, without anything in the background.

Now that you've downloaded your graphics, it's time to animate them using Keynote. To open Keynote, you can either go to finder, applications, and then select Keynote, or use the search tool in the menu up top to open the spotlight search. Start typing in Keynote, and click on the app to open it up. Select 'file' from the menu up top, and then 'new'. From the 'wide' presentation themes, choose the 'white presentation', and then click on 'choose'.

Let's delete those two textboxes that are on the screen, and import the graphics we just created in Canva. To do so, click on 'insert', 'choose', locate and select the Canva graphics, and then click on 'insert'. You can resize and reposition them so that they look and are arranged in the way you wish. I'll add each one to the top corners of the document.

To animate the graphics, click on the one you want to animate first, and click on 'animate' from the menu on the top right. Where it says 'build in', click on 'add an effect', and then select an effect of your choice from the available options. Let's say I want this YouTube icon to 'drop', so I'll go ahead and select that. You can also increase or decrease the duration of the effect, so let's decrease that to 1 second, and preview what the effect will look like. Under order, you can choose which effect will come first, so since I want these graphics to appear when I say 'make sure to subscribe and hit the bell', I'll want the YouTube icon to be number 1 and the bell icon to be number 2. To animate the bell, click on it, and repeat the exact same process.

Just like we saved our graphics with a transparent background in Canva, we need to save this animated presentation with a transparent background. To do so, click on 'format' from the menu on the top right, and under 'background' change where it says 'color fill' to 'no fill'. As you can see, the background will change to black when we do that, and that just means that there's no background. In other words, it's transparent.

Once you're happy with the animation of your graphics, and wish to save it to your computer, click on 'file', 'export to' and select 'movie'. Where it says 'resolution', click on 'custom', and select 'Apple pro res 4444'. What this will do is save this animation with a transparent background, the same way we save images with a transparent background as PNG. Click on 'next', and save the presentation with your animated graphics.

Now that you've animated your graphics, it's time to add them to your video in iMovie. To open iMovie, you can either go to finder, applications, and then select iMovie, or use the search tool in the menu up top to open the spotlight search. Start typing in iMovie, and click on the app to open it up. In iMovie, click on 'create new', then on 'movie', and on 'import media' to import the video clip you want to add your animated graphics to, as well as the actual animated graphics.

Now drag and drop the movie clip onto the working area, and the animated graphics above that. When you click on 'play', you'll notice that your animated graphics will appear. You can drag the animated graphics so that they start and stop at the exact moment of your choice, and trim its clip if you think that it's too long. Subscribe and stay tuned for next week's video, where I'll be covering 'how to edit a video with iMovie'.
