ConvertKit Tutorial + ConvertKit Demo: How To Do Email Marketing For Beginners



Today we’re going to do a ConvertKit demo so that you can better understand how to do email marketing even as a beginner. I use ConvertKit daily in my online business, and it’s the most robust email marketing platform out there at a reasonable price. It’s what I use and recommend to all of my students, and now’s your turn to rock at email marketing as well.

Alright, so let’s get right into our ConvertKit demo. If you watched my video on Mailchimp vs ConvertKit, the link to it is in the description box below and in the cards above, you’ll know that ConvertKit has a bunch of unlimited features that’ll help you grow and scale your online business starting at just $29 per month. When you login to your ConvertKit account, you’ll be redirected to your subscribers page.


From this graph, you can see a visual representation of the number of subscribers you gain and lose per day, as well as a snapshot of the total number of subscribers you have for any given time period. If there are any rises and dips at specific moments, you can reflect on what’s working and what’s not working for your email marketing tactics. For instance, I just recently went through a launch, and always during launches I see a bigger number of unsubscribes.


Right below the graph you have your lifetime totals, where you can see your total number of subscribers, average open rate, average click rate, the number of emails sent and the number of new subscribers you gained today.


If you scroll a bit down, you’ll see your subscriber list. You can sort them to see all subscribers, confirmed subscribers, unconfirmed subscribers, cancelled subscribers, complained subscribers, bounced subscribers and cold subscribers. On the right-hand side of your subscriber list, you can search for a specific subscriber, add a new subscriber, and see and add new segments and tags to differentiate your subscribers.


Let’s head over to automations. This is where ConvertKit shines, and allows it to work for you, so you don’t have to. There are two types of automations: visual automations and rules. As the name says, under visual automation you can create steps that happen following the moment when a subscriber opts-in to your email list. For instance, in this signature sales template automation, after a subscriber opts in to a form from your website or from a stand-alone landing page, they’ll automatically receive this sales sequence. The cool thing is that you can edit the form, landing page or sales sequence directly from the visual automation by just clicking on it.


The other type of automation ConvertKit offers are rules. Under rules, you’ll set a trigger, that’ll automatically cause a predetermined action. For instance, when any of these triggers occur, you can select any of these actions to happen. Under the automations tab, you can also add an RSS feed to connect your blog feed to your email subscribers, and add integrations to third party providers, such as your online course platform, so that, for instance, your subscribers can get automatically tagged after they purchase one of your products. Forms and Landing pages is where you’ll go to create an entryway for subscribers to opt-in to your email list. I have a different form for each opt-in incentive that I create, so that when someone opts-in to receive, say, 100 blog post ideas, they’ll automatically receive this email with said blog post ideas within it. You can edit the content, main settings, incentive email, style, embed options, form integrations, and determine other options for each form you create.


To create a new form or landing page, click on new form, and select which one you want to create. For a form, you can choose the display format so that it’s inline, modal or a slide-in, select one of the available templates, and edit the form to look as you wish. Sequences is where you can view all of the email sequences you’ve already created and where you can create a new one. This sequence can be a welcome sequence, a sales pitch, a cold subscriber revival sequence, or anything else you wish. Remember when we talked about automations? That’s where you can get a new subscriber to your list automatically get a welcome sequence you create here.


To create a new sequence, just click on ‘new sequence’. Name your sequence what you wish, and click on ‘create sequence’. You’ll be prompted with this sample email. Feel free to edit the email subject line and content. Up top, you can change the status from draft to published, tweak when to send the email after the trigger has been met (if you want to send it immediately after, you can add 0), add a filter to this email to exclude certain subscribers from receiving it, delete this email, and preview it preview it in your browser or as a test email. To add a new email to this sequence, click on ‘+ add email’ on the left. Always remember to click ‘save all’ to make your changes active.


Under the sequence settings you can select the sending email address, determine when to send emails, choose an email template, exclude certain subscribers from your sequence, duplicate this sequence or delete it altogether.


Lastly, under broadcasts is where you can send one-off emails, such as to promote a new blog post or video. You’ll see on the left all of the already pre-scheduled broadcasts you have. One the right you can search for broadcasts, create a new broadcast, and view the status of all of your broadcasts.


To create a new broadcast, just click on ‘new broadcast’. Select the sending email address, and who will receive this broadcast. The fun thing about ConvertKit is that since you can tag and segment your subscribers, you can select certain broadcasts to very specific groups of people, such as to everyone with a certain tag, and no one within a certain segment. Just like with the sequence, you can customize your email broadcast to look as you wish, and then either send it immediately or schedule it for a later date.
